Monastery of St. Gertrude Supports Fair Trade

Many of us enjoy a cup or two of coffee or tea.  Who hasn’t read about the benefits of dark chocolate? These and other staples of the American diet are made from products grown elsewhere usually by small farmers.  Some large companies pay these small farmers barely more than  it costs them to grow their products. Fairly traded items provide growers a fair price.
For many years now, the Monastery has served Fair Trade coffee and tea in our dining room.  We choose to purchase at a higher cost than other brands from companies that support fair trade. It is a justice issue. We chose Equal Exchange products.  The Monastery is one of that company’s top selling faith-based customers.
The Book and Gift Shop both the physical shop and the online shop offer varieties of coffee and tea.  Cocoa also can be purchased at our online shop.  In December, we offer fair trade 3.5 ounce candy bars.
Over the next few days, we will feature articles from Equal Exchange about their products and their partners.
